Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau, a gender advocate, human rights activist and lawyer with more than two decades’ experience in women’s rights advocacy, leads Ipas’s work in Nigeria. She joined Ipas in 2006 as a senior policy advisor. Ms. Shekarau has held various leadership positions at the Nigeria Bar Association and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria.
She was the immediate past National President of FIDA Nigeria and is a regular commentator and public affairs analyst in Nigeria. Ms. Shekarau obtained her first degree training in law from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, and had her professional training at the Nigeria Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos. In 2007, she was awarded a post-graduate degree in Law and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London.
